GSVM Medical College was the first Medical College of Uttar Pradesh in independent India it was established in 1955.

In the years 1955 & 1956, the first and the second batch of admissions took place respectively in KGMC which further shifted its premises in 1957 when the college building was ready. The Department of Medicine was started here in 1957 and Prof. KN Gaur was the HOD from 1957 to 1962. In the initial years, the department was running in the main building, i.e. the present wards 11 & 12 (approximately 80 beds) with Consultant’s Chamber and Office of Deptt & the library was situated at the Present Department of Radiology.

In the year 1962, Prof. Kedarnath took over as the HOD and through the medium of the Singhania Family (JK Group) created this present institute in the year 1972. With the start of the new building, 100 new beds were added in the present wards 13,14,15 & 16 which were commissioned in November 1972. The first batch of MD students passed out from this institute in December 1972. One of our teachers, Prof. BD Mangal was from the 1st batch.

During the early ’70s, the cardiology unit was functioning quite actively under Dr SC Jain. Thereafter, a separate Institute of Cardiology was carved In the early 80s professor R N Tandon, a member of the Super Speciality board started 10 bedded ICU in ward 13, At present we have 20 bedded ICU with Advanced facilities, running in the emergency building whereas ward 13 has 10 bedded HDU upgraded infrastructure, At the same time dialysis was established by professor Santosh Kumar, Endoscopic services was started by Dr BD Mangal & ultrasound services by (Late) Dr SK Saxena.

From the beginning, Excellent Academics, Flawless Clinical Expertise, strict discipline, and timely Guidance from the Teachers
, variety of Patients made the department one the most favoured place to study among PG Students in the entire state, Besides the department Is proud of giving numerous great clinicians serving across the globe

Between 2000 to 2010 Several Senior faculties got Retired and were replaced by Newer faculties, In the year 2014, Several super speciality ( Endocrine, Diabetes,  Thyroid& obesity, Rheumatology, Respiratory& Hematology)clinics was started by the young faculties,

Dramatic changes took place both in infrastructure, academics & research activities between 2017 to 2021 during the period of Prof (Dr) Richa Giri as Director, HOD & Vice Principal,

Medicine Office and Consultants chambers, Auditorium, Seminar hall, HDU, Dialysis Room were renovated, Entire place now has wifi connectivity, Research lab has been established in the department, General ward 14,15,16 Is having bedside Oxygen pipelines.

Soon the department will be having 25 PG residents each year making it one of the largest departments of the college.
